ACEDH and its Hybrid Approach to Human Rights and the Environment in the North Kivu Region, the DRC
Who are we and why a hybrid approach?
Our actions are focused on safeguarding activities of human rights and the environment through community-based pillars focused on land governance and access to justice.
Working with the local community, ACEDH believes that through finding solutions to land issues, we can bring about economic and social development. There needs to be more action to strengthen human rights, transparency and the promotion of initiatives supporting farming, which can help farmers meet basic social needs that guarantee human rights.
ACEDH believes that safeguarding the environment calls for advocacy, community education and the democratization of the debate on the environment and climate governance. The community needs to know and be informed on these issues and these efforts to allow for cooperation between all stakeholders.
Securing the property assets of local communities is a key factor for the preservation of the environment and human rights in an area where the land is the main resource of the community members.
Why this approach?
ACEDH believes that the question of safeguarding the environment and human rights are interdependent, and action must be taken in an integrated manner. The issues concerning land governance in the North Kivu region, and in the DRC in general are among the causes of human rights violations.. In addition, the conservation of the environment depends on land governance, because members of communities who do not own land must go into officially and unofficially protected areas such as parks and forests to look for housing, to poach, to cut down trees for wood or to seek resources to provide income. ACEDH understands that to save human rights and the environment, we must develop comprehensive and integrated strategies that promote secure rights of the poor and vulnerable and promote protective mechanisms at the community level..

Strategic Objectives of the ACEDH
1. Contribute to safeguarding the environment and the real estate assets of the most vulnerable (the poor, widows, orphans, etc.,) through advocacy, access to justice to secure land rights of local communities’ waterfronts, farms, plantations and Virunga National Park in North-Kivu for peace and socio-economic development at grassroots level.
2. Contribute to promoting participation in debates and cultural transparency in the management of local resources to promote the development and effectiveness of human rights at the grassroots level.
3. Contribute to promoting peaceful coexistence and the prevention of land conflicts and to identify ways to support the development and the safeguarding of the environment and human rights at the grassroots level.
4. Contribute to institutional strengthening, mobilization and empowerment for the protection,
safety and advocacy of Justice Auxiliary and Civil Society Actors; and Defenders of Human Rights in the DRC.

The Social Purpose of ACEDH asbl is to contribute to the promotion, environmental protection and human rights for a durable peace within its working field and the world wide in general.
OUR ACTIONS TARGET
ACEDH aim to rehabilitate the weak or vulnerable victims of violations of human rights;
Widows and orphans victims of human rights violations and the denial of Justice mainly.

Persons detained, arrested and sentenced Pygmies Indigenous Peoples The victims of sexual violence and acts of torture, Journalists, witnesses, human rights activists, foreigners and Displaced Children and women exploited on farms and mining sites , to access to justice.
